The Supremes were a hugely successful American soul and R&B group formed in 1961, originally known as The Primettes from 1959 to 1960. The most stable lineup included Diana Ross, Florence Ballard, and Mary Wilson, making them Motown's top act of the 1960s. However, by the 1970s, only Wilson remained in the group. In early 1967, the group changed their name to Diana Ross & The Supremes, a move that Motown president claimed was intended to secure higher fees for live performances, amidst rumors of Ross pursuing a solo career. This name variation was applied retrospectively, beginning with a release of early songs. During this period, Ballard struggled with personal issues, leading to her replacement by Cindy Birdsong in June 1967. In January 1970, Diana Ross & The Supremes performed for the last time under that name, after which Ross embarked on her solo career. Jean Terrell succeeded Ross as the lead singer, and the group reverted to the name The Supremes. The Supremes were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1988 as performers.
